Shard #1 - Lady Xidar
While completing A Web of Terror, after defeating Lady Xidar, loot her throne for the shard.
Shard #2 - King Gurguth
Travel into The Trollfens and enter Gurgurth Cave. Fight your way to the southeast corner, where the Troll King Gurguth awaits. After defeating the King and his minions, loot his throne for the shard.
Shard #3 - Faazvolfrul
Travel to Northwest Sagar Forest and enter Gorx Lair. Make your way to the northeast corner. From here, you will need to enter the nearby lava river and head upstream into The Deep Cauldron. At the fork, head east, dispatching the wyvern. Ignore the north passage, and locate the secret door in the northeastern corner, surrounded by flames. Here you will find the Fire Dragon. Defeat him and loot the shard from the large chest in the back of the area.
Shard #4 - Araim Darkflames
Travel to the Great Inori desert and enter the Irazur Tomb. Discover the secret passage leading north, locate the secret door behind the third sarcophagus, and clear the room. There is one last secret door in the northwest corner
Shard 5 - The Undermother or Flame Prophet
To complete the quest The Prodigal Daughter you must kill either The Undermother or Flame Prophet and both drop a shard (it's possible to kill Flame Prophet and then The Undermother for another shard but this is VERY difficult).
Shard 6 Lich in The Mausoleum
He's found behind a hidden door. The Black Shard drop is NOT guaranteed. He is essentially just a rumor boss that you don't have to gossip to find.
Shard 7 Golden Cove Bank
During The Snake Gang quest, depending on the choices you make, you may be the hero who ends up taking part in.... *cough cough* ... a bank heist. This will be a robbery of Golden Cove Bank and one of the treasures will be a black shard. But since you can only rob the bank once, you will only have one chance to get the shard

These bosses will drop shards, others you can find in random caves in chests, bosses, secret doors.
Most of the "giant" rumour bosses drops shard but not always.

So either I'm just bad at the game or I'm missing something.
Don't be so harsh on yourself. This game is designed to be tough so even on the causal play through, it can be harder than other games. It sounds like you hit a limbo where you are too strong for some stuff but not ready for the next stuff. It happens. Best advice is to use that time to hunt down rare drops, Rumor Bosses, run Town Hall Quests. You'll pop out of the limbo with better equipment, all the Black Shards and good reputation....

Sometimes you just got to grind. Feel free to ask for character build help in the general forum....

Looking at your build, that might be the answer. Choose one weapon type, either light or 2H, not both. If it's 2H, go all STR and pick the 2H specialist skill, if it's light, go all AGI and take Flurry. If it's neither (hand weapons) then balance both traits and pick infantry training. The game will become much easier if you focus on one development path.

I only use my light weapon now, still having trouble . I might have to rearrange my skills and traits. I use a light weapon with shock that adds 2 armour. I haven't put much into agility where I am a warrior, I always thought strength would be the best , I have my strength at 6. My attack on the weapon said it does 5-9 plus 3 shock and my damage said 11-15 but no matter what I attack it only does 3 damage plus 3 shock, so when I'm fighting a boss they rip my health apart while their health very slowly goes down lol

So I should put most into agility? What about strength and endurance? Also is there a certain build that makes your companion better, I usually use the warrior I've never used hirge is she good to have, and also I have none of the skills that you can learn from each warriors guild , are there any must haves ?

Go to your traits window, next to your trait there is an info icon that tells you exactly what effect they have. You'll see that, with light weapons, STR is almost irrelevant and AGI is the best.

Regarding melee skills, the one that boosts damage the most is flurry and it happens to have an AGI requirement, so it's typically a good choice for light weapons. Any skill that adds fixed damage is also good when you are attacking very fast (duel, heavyhand). Finally, you need a strategy vs stun and paralysis. One point in Battle Rage, or insanely high spirit resistance (or both) would be my advice.

There are other ways to try but this would be the easiest route.

Thanks for the help bys I did put most into agility for me and my companion it seemed to help, I managed to get two more shards, now I am up-to 5, I beat the lich and the king in the trollfends, I have been grinding like you mentioned 360 and got a bit of gold saved up and found better stuff , I'm moving forward slowly haha. I still can't beat the undermother because she annoyingly keeps healing herself. Also what is the highest level a character can get up to ? I'm level 18 now and my companion is level 16.

Also I'm curious is it any rumour monster has a chance to drop black shards , or is it just the ones that are mentioned in the shards of fate quest page?

Yes, any rumor boss has that chance to drop the black shard. However, once the shards of fate quest is completed (12 shards put into the mirror), the shards will not drop anymore and all other shards should disappear.

Any RUMOR BOSS can drop a shard but not all COMBATIVE RANDOM ENCOUNTERS are rumor bosses. Troll and Orc groups and the Rampaging Hill giant don't drop shards. The Giant Chieftain does.

Glad to hear a little fine tuning helped.
