Trolls regenerating despite being killed with a fire weapon

On a trip into the troll cave, three trolls regenerated. Two basic ones and an Elder Troll. Both Companion and Main character equipped with fire weapons. Third time it happened, snagged a screen shot of it. It seems the basic damage of the weapon killed the troll before the fire damage was added. Only happened three times in entire run, so I'm left wondering if trolls were given a small chance to regenerate, even if killed with a fire weapon, which seems a good flush-out for trolls.

Bash wouldn't have a fire damage, so that makes sense. The combat log doesn't indicate if Bash was used, and if the enemy dies, than it wouldn't get pushed back. So the only way to examine now would be to see what the damage range for Bash is, as it's not listed in the in-game skill description?

Fury II was active on her (+50% damage), with a damage range of 12-14 (+50% makes 21).

The combat log shows three hits with 21 damage (before troll defense), and only one not doing fire damage, so it seems odd the Bash hit would do the exact same pre-defense damage as a standard hit.

What's the damage equation for Bash? I can keep an eye out for this ... Curious.

You can see in the log, that Grisenda hits troll first with 21 (without fire) and then with 5 fire damage. Also the kill was without fire damage, that's why it starts to regenerate.

That's interesting. I've always had a significant problem with trolls, so I simply avoid them, and this shows me why. Apparently the physical and elemental damage components of a weapon don't hit at the same time.

Would it be possible to set it up so trolls die for good as long as they were hit with fire within, say, 2 seconds of their death? That would mean we'd still have to use a reliable fire source but wouldn't punish us for a mercenary or Earth Elemental stealing the kill or, even worse, actually killing it with a fire weapon but only with the physical part. Plus, fire damage would burn for a short while, so it would make sense.

Ok, now I'm confused

Tried to reproduce this, and the result is really strange

Normal damage and fire damage is separated, but still my troll stays dead even if the log shows only 'normal' damage.

It's strange that your troll regenerate, maybe there is a bug

This is just the way that combat log shows its output. As you noticed in your later post.

The regeneration code does verify if there is a fire component in your attack even if a non-fire damage source makes the kill first, otherwise, believe me, you'd know by now because over half the trolls would regenerate ;)

Bash damage is a regular attack from your character which excludes secondary damage sources, so unless further evidence is posted, I think bash is the culprit.

I'm inclined to agree... For awhile I focused only on passive skills for Grissenda. This might be one more reason to avoid Bash as a skill.

I don't think I've looked into how much damage Bash does as a skill, but thought it did less damage than a regular attack.
