I'll start it quick
In Southern jabal hills, the ambush can be sperated, first you need to be in any ranged state (staffs, bows), second you need a companion in a melee state, if you do that you can kill him without triggering the conversation that spawn his companions but if you get close to his corpse the conversation will be triggered and his companions will spawn without him

I noted the same bug. And it doesn't have to involve range weapons. One can get close enough to aggro the enemies but not hit the trigger spot for the dialogue. Easier with range weapons but not required.

A similar hiccup happens with the Mad Master in Nilorth Cave. One get aggro the monks inside the room from the door way (line of sight or range attack) resulting in them charging out. Dialogue triggered after every one is dead when one enters the room.
