Anybody know a good early game mage build that makes up for how fragile they are?

Probably what will make it easier is Wand Mastery (And obviously pick wands), Lightning Bolt and Mage Armor.

Oh, and make sure to have a Grissenda in your life.

Early Game Mages (EGM's for short, cause we're cool that way) are squishy. There's not much to be done about that. The steps above will help but when it comes down to it, Mages are destined to be kite fighters (hit-and-go) rather than pillars of fortitude.

Learning how to use mage spells effective helps a lot, too. Ice Storm can be a bit tricky to line-up right, but get a good bounce going and it can wreck havoc on anything in it's path (deliberately bounce it off walls, don't got for straight up attacks).

Summons help a lot. Anything that keeps the fighting Way Over There.

Mages grow to be powerful, insanely powerful. But it takes time.

Also, I have learned to NEVER put fireball on a level 1 mage. It just ends up with you killing yourself.

Start mage with 1 point on INT, AWA, PER, AGI. 1 point on Fireball. With fireball you never have to get anywhere near goblins. Stay Lannegar. Do goblin quest and blue flower quest. You should level up. Put 2 points in INT. 1 point staff mastery and 1 point mage armor. Buy staff of force. Get rodney. Go into mine get Teram. Drop Teram. Buy robe. Head to Bluemist. Drop off Rodeny. Get Grissenda. Go to Kingsbridge get grissenda silver mace. Level up. 2 points in PER. 2 points summon sparkling.

Next depends on townhall quests you receive. But usually to Rhoenis. Level up your staff ASAP. This will slow and stun your enemies. Good luck.

Don't forget to bully Teram for a reward. You get a Small Ruby which is a handy, reliable way of getting the gem for A Fair Deal's Cloak of the Wolf.
