Notes

  • This is an inferno, you take fire damage continuously the whole time you're in the area. You need high fire resistance to survive.
  • If you didn't bring along a dozen or so Greater Potions of Resist Fire from merchants in Nivarian or Icemist, you'll be wondering why not. But luckily the chests just east of the entrance (and at far northwest and southeast, if you wander that way) contain 3 of those each.
  • The lava rivers deal much much higher damage rates than the background air, and take you from "barely keeping it together" to "fried cajun-style" with remarkable speed. To travel down the one fire river that you sadly need to go through to leave this joint, a little Potion of Speed will help keep body and soul together (or even Greater Potion of Speed - if you've saved them, this is a great spot to use them). And there are spots along the edges of that river where you can pause to heal if needed. It would be a shame to have made it all this way and then die to an environmental hazard with the end in sight, wouldn't it?
  • The respawning Fire Elementals are all outside the Citadel, and are somewhat randomly scattered in the rest of the area. Nothing respawns inside the Citadel.
  • All enemies in this level are Outsiders and thus take extra damage from Banishing Weapons. The extra damage dealt by Cold Weapons, meanwhile, ranges from +100% (Fire Elementals) to +50% (the Demons) to 0% (the two bosses), so for those bosses you may actually prefer something like Adamantite weapons, or the Queen's Heart.
  • When passing through the door to the Basalt Citadel, it loads a new sub-area as if you were entering a city. This means anything chasing you beforehand (including the Greater Demon guarding the entrance) does not follow you into the citadel.
  • Beating the Lord of the Pit is not necessary for taking the portal back to safety. However, he does drop a Tome of Lost Wisdom, if you have enough left in the tank by this point to beat him.
  • If you are able to summon Fire Elementals, perhaps by using Scroll: Summon Fire Elemental, they make great damage mops: they will be continuously healed by every enemy in this area, and even moreso if they can stand in the lava river, so they can be nearly invincible. They can't deal damage, mind you (indeed, they heal the enemies), but they can distract enemy attention very ably, to enable you to divide and conquer (or run).
