Notes

  • 3x of the Nightwalkers, the ones around the Dark Pool, respawn every 45s. Beat them, do your business at the pool, and get the heck outta there.
  • The witches are a hard and risky enough battle that you won't want to lose your progress after getting to the pool; it's probably advisable to head back after doing your business at the pool, finish the quest and save. Plus, returning to Laughing Deer for the quest reward can help all on its own - the Ancestral Blade of the Deer can make mincemeat of the Nightwalkers and also Varessa.
  • You will need a lot of specific preparation to take on the witches: weapons dealing Fire, Cold and Shock damage (one for each of 'em), and protection against Shock and Fire (for Varessa) along with Death (for the Sabercat and Mylora). Potions for resistance are a good idea, as are summoning scrolls and at least a few Scroll: Circle of Restoration if you can cast them - because someone's gonna get dropped. Blafarne can deal 150+ damage with her massive criticals, so be prepared to use a bunch of summons as meat shields and to revive your companion, because you will need to.
  • When ready for the witch queens, it is highly recommended to split up the three of them (plus the two "pets"), and not take them all on at once. Have your companion wait across the bridge (or even inside the room to the south, so you can use the door as a chokepoint - N.B. does not help much with Blafarne, the archer one). Then very carefully try to get the attention of one enemy at a time, and then drag them back over there to be fought alone. The witches stand in one spot, but Varessa's Golem wanders, as does Blafarne's Pet cat. Have patience; if they're all standing around each other, getting the attention of one will likely get the attention of many... which is bad.
  • If you can't avoid a jailbreak of many enemies at once, consider having your companion stand way, way back (like towards the bridge back by the statue), and plan to run like hell and try to get some of the enemies caught around the doors, fall far behind you, and thereby de-aggro. Then you can get back to your companion, make a stand, and slowly advance back through the rooms, taking on whoever stopped there one by one (hopefully). Nobody said this would be easy!
