Quest Steps

Detailed Walkthrough
Towards the end of A Mysterious Letter, you will end up locked in the Unknown Dungeon. Amarisa is trapped in the cell next to you. Using the last of her power, she transports you outside your cell so you can start your escape. After fighting your way through the dungeon, you can optionally check her cell and find it empty. Note: to update the quest log you will have to physical go to her cell.
Optionally: Rur'azar at the The Great Library can research The Forsaken for you in exchange for 3 Fire Salts. Fire salts are dropped by several different fire type enemies as well as a rare item sold by the Travelling Alchemist and A Shady Traveller. Rur'azar's research into The Forsaken the group operated in the Wyvern Mountains decades ago. You can optionally talk to Sogarad, the travel mage in Icemist, about Amarisa. He'll tell you she got a letter about an inheritance and left to collect it. It's implied Amarisa got the same letter you did at the start of the game and was ambushed when she went to the Magistrate's house.
Note: If you ask Rur'azar to research Lord Tremadan first, you may the lose ability to research The Forsaken. Once you talk to the Ghostly Figure for the first time, you can no longer ask Rur'azar to research The Forsaken, or give him fire salts as payment. This causes no long-term issues in the game.
Complete A Key to the Past and the Ghostly Figure will tell you Amarisa is your sister. As a member of Arch-Mage Tremadan's lineage, she allegedly possesses the blood needed to open a Deep Gate. The same Deep Gates that destroyed the Empire years ago.
Optionally: In your encounter in the Dragon Coast, you have the chance to ask Valeran about Amarisa's whereabouts. You can only do this if you manage to avoid engaging in a fight with him by passing Trait checks and making certain dialogue choices. He will inform you that she is being held captive by the Magister in the Ark of Lothasan, but almost escaped. Getting this information doesn't impact Amarisa's location.
In Ark of Lothasan (Upper Deck) you will finally find Amarisa held in a cell in Northeast corner. To free her you need to turn off the light barrier by accessing a terminal behind a secret door. The secret door is next to her cell. You can send her out of the Ark, flee with her, or have her aid you in your fight. How you choose to aid her alters the ending of the quest. Alternatively, if you are attempting to join the Forsaken there's a much darker outcome. You will have to kill your sister to prove your loyalty.
If you tell Amarisa to leave, she will flee the Ark safely. If you have Amarisa join you, she will attack enemies with ranged shock damage. Note: If she dies, the quest will update with her death. Amarisa does NOT respawn once killed. You can clear out the Upper Deck of enemies, than go back and get Amarisa if you want to ensure she's with you at the final confrontation. There's no benefit to her presence in the final debate with the Forsaken. Amarisa will help fight the Dimensional Parasite if she's alive for the fight. If Amarisa survived the Ark, you can later find her in Icemist by the traveller mage. She has a lot of missed traveller work to do and won't be able to join you for any more adventures.
